City proposes renaming of MyCiTi Phoenix station to MyCiTi Freedom station
01 November 2023
The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate plans to rebuild the MyCiTi stations that were severely damaged during civil unrest some time before the Covid-19 pandemic. One of these stations is Phoenix, situated on Omuramba Road, Milnerton. Prior to the destruction of the station, some people living close to the Phoenix station indicated their dissatisfaction with this specific name. In response to the community’s sentiments, the City is now inviting the public to comment on the proposal to change the name to ‘Freedom’. Read more:
‘The station is situated close to Freedom Way in Joe Slovo and, therefore, the City is proposing that the station name be changed from Phoenix station to Freedom station. Engagements with the political leadership and community resulted in support for the public participation process to be undertaken to establish whether the community supports the proposed name change. We invite residents to indicate whether they support or object to the proposed name,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The public and interested and affected parties are encouraged to submit comments, recommendations or input by 30 November 2023.
Comments, input, and recommendations can be submitted in any of the following ways:
